Gazing up at my corrugated card fantail, surrounded by leaf green trees and bushes I thought about all the minor details. Was it straight? Did the colours match? This was my sixth pet day but the first pet day we had ever made corrugated card animals. I really enjoyed making this piece of art because of all the different steps we took. First we drew a plan of what we wanted it to look like. I searched the Internet for some inspiration. Next we ripped the back round out of news paper. I was trying to create the illusion of a forest. We then had to dye the background with appropriate colours. I added texture to mine to make it stand out a bit more. The second to last step was to create your creature. As mine was a Fantail I used the different sides of the card to give my bird wings and other features. It was suggested by Kate to make my fantail stand out more. I did this by sticking it on poles to create a 3D effect and last but not least the back round ... Mine has 4 triangles with a little triangle in the middle of each big one. All together I think it looked really cool and I felt really proud of my creation.
I was the last person to do my screen printing. My ideas had been stolen twice and I was determined for it not to happen a third time. I wanted mine to be original!! I printed in lime green a picture of N.Z with the words “There is only one!” above it in black. As I was pressured for time it was a relief when I hung it up to dry by the fire place. Doing screen printing every year you learn alot about what to do and what not to do!
“Gigi ... here Gigi,” I called. She sprinted across the field and skidded to a holt right in front of me. I think she was a bit stunned because she walked as though she had just got off a roller coaster or seen a scary movie. I tried to lead her to mum but no luck “Come on!,” I wailed. She just stood there as stubborn as possible, so I picked her up and carried her like a pillow. If any one asked I would say that it was more convenient. Finally we made it over to the ring. Dad told me not to be in the front but just as he said that I got the number one. Once she got in the ring, she did almost every thing perfectly. I ended up winning the cup for senior lambs! Having a lamb every year, you learn not only how to care for other animals but how much work it actually takes to look after another species. Pet day I think is the best way to learn, it’s fun and we can link it in with our school’s emphasis on using authentic contexts for learning . Over all its a really fun day!!

Science Fair 2009
I have just gained second place in our Oroua Science Fair. My next step in to present my investigation at the Fonterra Manawatu Science Fair.
Grease 2009
My goal is to 'become' Sandy by using voice, gestures and actions.
I have just spent 2 weeks of my learning time practicing for our annual mid year production. This year we choose Grease. Some people may say that our school is crazy wasting 2 weeks of learning time practising but I think I learnt so much more doing Grease rather than sitting at my desk writing in to a book. A few examples of what we learnt are here. I learnt how to rock and roll dance and how to be mature about a situation that I would usually find difficult to be mature in. My character that I played was the sweet and innocentSandra Dee. I think that this role suited me quite well because I am one of the lovey dovey girls of the school. I do have a sweet side. For my costume I wore a sweet dress with a cute pink cardigan over top. Before we started practicing we set goals. My goal was tobecome Sandy! tI think I achieved my goal because I was sweet and innocent . My biggest challenge that I faced positively was changing in the middle of the play from a sweet innocent girl to a cool laid back Sandy! I enjoyed the whole show. Just the experience of being on stage was a thrill. I feel really proud of my self for getting up on stage and singing my solos. I felt really nervous at first but after a while it began to be fun and exciting. Next year I would like to improve on my dancing and going out of my comfort zone and playing a character that is not sweet. Over all it was an Awesome experience and worth while doing.
